The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lodged a formal request with the Supreme Court, urging it to halt a national convention planned by a faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Scheduled for March 29 and 30, the convention is intended to elect new national executives, but the PDP argues that it threatens to undermine the ongoing appeal process. The party’s appeal, marked SC/CV/166/26, challenges the Court of Appeal’s nullification of last year’s national convention in Ibadan, which resulted in the removal of the Turaki leadership.
The appellants claim that the lower courts’decisions were made without jurisdiction and that the respondents, including Austine Nwachukwu and Amah Abraham Nnanna, lack the standing to initiate the lawsuit. The party further argues that the Supreme Court’s decision on the appeal would be rendered ineffective if the convention goes ahead. Chairman Pharmacist Samaila Burga revealed the formation of this committee, emphasizing the party’s commitment to resolving disputes and reinforcing member unity.
Burga also dismissed speculation about defections, asserting the party’s unity and focus on rebuilding. Meanwhile, former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Chief Olabode George, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to overcome the crisis and criticized the APC’s attempts to disrupt the PDP’s stability.
