In a bold stance, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has openly welcomed any investigations into corruption allegations within the organization. This came in response to Senegal’s government’s threats following the controversial decision to award the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final to Morocco. The situation escalated after Senegal’s coach, Pape Thiaw, spurred his players to abandon the pitch following a referee’s decision to award a penalty to Morocco.
Motsepe, addressing the issue in Dakar, expressed his willingness to cooperate fully with any inquiries. “I would encourage it, “he said emphasizing his commitment to upholding the integrity of African football. Despite Senegal’s accusations of corruption, Motsepe stands firm in his belief that all countries are treated equally. “Under no circumstances will any single country in Africa be treated more preferentially or more favorably than any other, “he declared.
The chaos surrounding the AFCON final has not deterred Motsepe from focusing on the bigger picture. He acknowledges the ongoing legal battle between Senegal and CAF, which has now reached the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Motsepe’s priority lies in ensuring that the necessary laws are in place and enforced, a task he views as the greatest gift to African football. As the continent grapples with its current challenges, Motsepe calls for unity, expressing confidence in Africa’s ability to overcome them.
