DAKAR, Senegal — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe visited Dakar on Wednesday, less than a month following the contentious decision to strip Senegal of its African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco. The visit was announced in March as part of Motsepe’s commitment to foster unity within African football amid widespread criticism of the governing body.
The tense atmosphere in Senegal is a direct result of CAF’s reversal of Senegal’s 1-0 win in the AFCON final against Morocco on January 18. CAF’s decision, which cited regulations about leaving the field, sparked a walkout by Senegalese players, coaches, and staff. Senegal’s appeal of the decision is currently pending at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The Senegalese government has been vocal in its response, demanding an international investigation into allegations of corruption within CAF. Motsepe, however, has stated his intention to respect and implement the CAS decision, deeming his personal opinion irrelevant to the process.
Upon arrival in Dakar, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye will greet Motsepe at the presidential palace, followed by a press conference. The meeting is anticipated to discuss the ongoing AFCON title controversy and outline potential solutions for the future of African football.
