Cairo, Egypt — Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), arrived in Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday, April 4, for meetings with local officials. The visit follows the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which ended in controversy after Senegal’s walk-off left the tournament unfinished. Senegalese journalist Lassana Camara reported that the trip is part of CAF’s efforts to maintain contact with key football authorities following the recent events.
The 2025 AFCON final, which did not conclude as expected, prompted CAF to apply its rules, articles 82 and 84, which cover match abandonment and breaches of competition rules, ultimately awarding the title to Morocco. The Senegalese Football Federation expressed reservations about the outcome, and the decision was met with mixed reactions in Dakar. Discussions have centered on the circumstances of the withdrawal and the management of the final.
During a press conference on March 29 in Cairo, Motsepe addressed the situation, emphasizing that CAF aims to “repair what can be repaired “by engaging in direct discussions with both Senegal and Morocco. He also stressed the importance of football not creating tension between nations, particularly those with historical ties. Motsepe’s visit to Dakar is seen as a step towards maintaining communication and calming the situation.
The visit highlights the significant impact football decisions can have beyond the game itself and underscores the importance of dialogue in African football. It remains to be seen whether the discussions will lead to a shared understanding, but it underscores the critical role of communication in resolving disputes within the sport.
