In the Oti Region, football fans in Kadjebi have been voicing a range of opinions following the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to dismiss Otto Addo as Head Coach of the Black Stars. The move comes on the heels of a series of disappointing performances, including a 2-1 defeat to Germany and a 5-1 loss to Austria in recent international friendlies.
Ms Margaret Ofori, a local football enthusiast, welcomed the decision, calling it long overdue. “Mr Addo failed to meet expectations, “she said adding that she was concerned about the excessive politicisation of football in the country and advocated for reforms.
On the other hand, Mr Evans Ghansah, another fan, supported the dismissal but took issue with the timing. “With only two months before an upcoming FIFA tournament, this decision could disrupt preparations, “he noted. Mr Mawuli Gavu echoed this sentiment, insisting that the sacking should have been done earlier, especially after Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mr Medar Mensah Avorgbedor also welcomed the coach’s exit, citing Addo’s failure to deliver on his mandate. He advocated for the selection of the best local players into the national team and called for an end to the politicisation of player selection, which he described as detrimental to the development of football in Ghana.
The GFA has been inundated with applications for the Black Stars Head Coach position, having received over 600 applications, according to reports by Ghanasoccernet. Com. The GFA president, Kurt Okraku, confirmed the high level of interest in the role, noting that a new coach could be appointed within one to two weeks.
The FA is now expected to begin a thorough screening process to shortlist candidates, with both local and foreign coaches believed to be in contention. The urgency surrounding Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup adds weight to the importance of this appointment. The next coach will be expected to deliver immediate impact while also shaping the long-term direction of the Black Stars.
