Gabon’s Minister of Justice Discusses Legal Harmonization with OHADA/CCJA Judge. Libreville, Gabon — The Gabonese Minister of Justice, Augustin Emane, recently convened with Professor Charles Mba Owono, a Gabonese legal scholar and newly elected judge to the OHADA/Community Court of Justice of Africa (OHADA/CCJA), to discuss the advancement of legal harmonization across the continent.
According to local reports, the meeting aimed to explore strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of the OHADA legal framework, which is designed to promote economic integration and development in the region.
Professor Mba Owono’s election to the OHADA/CCJA, a key judicial organ of the OHADA, is seen as a significant milestone for Gabon and the broader African legal community.
The OHADA, which stands for the Organisation pour l’Harmonisation en Afrique du Droit des Affaires, is a supranational organization that aims to harmonize the business laws of its member states.
The CCJA was established to ensure the uniform application of OHADA laws and to provide a regional arbitration mechanism.
During the meeting, the Minister of Justice and Professor Mba Owono are said to have exchanged views on a range of legal issues, including the need for further harmonization of commercial laws, the challenges of cross — border legal disputes, and the role of the CCJA in promoting legal certainty and economic growth in Africa.
The government stated in a communiqué that the discussions were fruitful and that both parties agreed on the importance of strengthening the institutional capacity of the CCJA. Officials confirmed that further details regarding the implementation of the agreed-upon strategies would be provided in the near future.
The meeting comes at a time when the African Union is actively promoting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which is expected to deepen economic integration and create a single market for goods and services. Legal harmonization is seen as a crucial component for the successful implementation of the AfCFTA. Further details regarding the outcomes of the meeting and the subsequent steps to be taken are expected to be released in the coming days.
