Rabat — The OCP Group, a Moroccan multinational, has taken a leading role in addressing cadmium concerns within the agricultural sector, aligning its strategies with the latest scientific research and European regulatory trends. The French Agency for Food Safety (ANSES) recently highlighted cadmium, a naturally occurring metal, in a report released on March 25, reigniting public interest. This report, extending research from 2019, aims to diminish cadmium exposure over time.
OCP Group, through its subsidiary OCP Nutricorps, has preemptively implemented measures to tackle these concerns, well ahead of regulatory requirements. Cadmium, present in soils due to natural and human activities, has raised toxicity concerns. The ANSES report suggests a threshold of 20 milligrams of cadmium per kilogram of P2O5 for stabilizing soil concentrations.
While this is currently advisory, the European Commission’s Regulation 2019/1009 permits up to 60 mg Cd/kg P2O5. OCP Nutricrops has chosen to adhere to the ANSES threshold, selling fertilizers in Europe with less than 20 mg of cadmium per kilogram of P2O5.
This shift required substantial investment in research and industrial processes. Collaborating with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), OCP Group developed de-cadmium technologies, demonstrating a long-term strategy rather than a reactive adjustment.
Public debate often focuses on fertilizers as the primary source of cadmium, but scientific evidence indicates a more complex scenario. The French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) provide a nuanced view, emphasizing the broader system of natural processes, industrial emissions, and waste management.
OCP Nutricrops’adoption of the 20 mg cadmium threshold signifies a commitment to evidence-driven foresight, integrating scientific insights into operational strategies. The company’s precision fertilization approach aligns with ANSES recommendations and represents a shift in the fertilizer sector.
The challenge of balancing soil fertility and environmental risk is complex. OCP Nutricrops addresses this by combining lower cadmium content with targeted application strategies, setting a precedent for sustainable agricultural practices.
OCP Group’s proactive stance on cadmium reduction reflects a commitment to long-term soil and food safety objectives. As the fertilizer industry navigates the balance between productivity and environmental responsibility, OCP Nutricrops’leadership positions it as a beacon for sustainable agriculture’s future.
