ABUJA, Nigeria — Hundreds of delegates from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have assembled at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja for the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The convention, supported by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, is set to span two days, commencing today (Sunday) and concluding on Monday.
According to a list obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, 2,632 delegates are in attendance for the event, where they are poised to elect the National Working Committee (NWC) to succeed the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC). Despite opposition from the Tanimu Turaki-led faction, which had its convention invalidated by the Court of Appeal earlier this month, Governor Wike’s faction, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, has confirmed the convention will proceed as scheduled.
The convention is a pivotal moment for the PDP, as the party aims to strengthen its leadership and outline its future direction. It coincides with internal challenges and competition from other political parties, with the election of the NWC considered crucial for the party’s electoral prospects.
