Abuja, Nigeria — In response to the escalating issue of sexual abuse in Nigeria’s educational institutions, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has initiated a national teachers’ investigative panel and tribunal across all 36 states. The council has also established a dedicated hotline for reporting abuse cases, with the aim of creating safer learning environments nationwide.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, TRCN Executive Secretary Dr. Ronke Soyombo shared that the initiative has been met with widespread support from educators and schools. Dr. Soyombo underscored the importance of safety in educational settings, emphasizing the council’s dedication to improving teacher professionalism and the protection of students.
In addition to the investigative panel and hotline, the TRCN has introduced a compliance department. This department is tasked with vetting teachers for criminal records and aims to establish a national database by mid-year to prevent individuals with sexual offenses from working with children.
Soyombo also highlighted that the council’s efforts have been furthered by a high-profile teacher summit at the State House, attended by dignitaries, including the first lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu. The summit aimed to promote a culture of high teaching standards and transform the mindset of educators.
Supported by development partners, the TRCN’s initiatives are part of a sustained effort to raise teaching standards and protect students. The council anticipates further enhancements in the educational sector as these initiatives progress, with more details to be announced in the coming months.
