Lagos, Nigeria — In response to the escalating issue of sexual abuse in Nigerian schools, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has initiated a series of measures aimed at curbing such activities. This includes the establishment of a teachers’ investigative panel and tribunal across all 36 states of the country.
The TRCN has also introduced a dedicated hotline for the immediate reporting of abuse cases, ensuring swift action can be taken. During a press briefing in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of TRCN, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, highlighted the positive response from teachers and schools to these initiatives, emphasizing the need for educational centers to be safe environments for students.
To further enhance teacher professionalism and safety, the TRCN has launched a compliance department tasked with vetting teachers for criminal records. Dr. Soyombo revealed that the council aims to establish a national database by mid-year, ensuring that individuals with sexual offenses are not employed in educational settings.
In addition to these measures, the TRCN has implemented the Professional Qualifying Exam and the abuse reporting hotline. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to transform the mindset of teachers and elevate teaching standards. A recent incentive program, which awarded a teacher with 50 million naira, a house, and a car, has sparked healthy competition among educators.
With support from development partners, the TRCN is committed to sustained progress in raising teaching standards and protecting students. Dr. Soyombo expressed optimism about the ongoing initiatives, noting that further updates will be provided as they continue to roll out.
