LAGOS, NIGERIA — President Bola Tinubu has authorized the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include electric vehicles, renaming it the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV). This strategic move aims to enhance Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy.
In a statement released on Thursday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced that the President has tasked the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV, Ismael Ahmed, with establishing a process for the swift deployment of vehicle conversion kits across the nation. These kits will be made available to Nigerians at a cost that is not prohibitive, facilitated by partnerships with financial institutions and relevant partners.
Additionally, the President has directed the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to increase access to CNG while permanent infrastructure is being developed. PiCNG & EV will spearhead and coordinate Nigeria’s comprehensive clean mobility strategy, encompassing both gas-driven and electric vehicles nationwide.
The Initiative will continue to develop CNG infrastructure while also focusing on the development and rollout of electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, and related investments across the country. This integration of electric vehicles is a strategic step to advance the government’s agenda for affordable, efficient, and environmentally responsible mobility.
