Lagos, Nigeria — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced a strengthened approach to tackle unsafe consumer products in Nigeria. Speaking at the 2026 World Consumer Rights Day commemorations in Abuja, Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Mr. Tunji Bello outlined the FCCPC’s intensified collaboration with sector regulators and the national standards body to address market weaknesses.
Bello emphasized the importance of structured collaboration, information sharing, and joint interventions to eliminate substandard products. He highlighted the FCCPC’s commitment to effective monitoring and enforcement across all markets, noting that while the commission does not control prices, fair pricing is essential for market functionality.
He also pointed out that the commission frequently encounters products that do not meet basic safety and quality standards, including those with incorrect labeling and those lacking essential safety requirements. In some cases, there is evidence of deliberate disregard for legal and regulatory obligations.
Bello stressed that product safety is a core obligation with significant public interest implications, aligning with the federal government’s economic reform program under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The FCCPC CEO explained that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018 provides a clear legal framework for consumer rights, mandating that goods meet safety, durability, and purpose standards.
The commission has expanded market surveillance and strengthened product testing in priority sectors, Bello noted. “We will continue to act where conduct undermines fairness, transparency, or safety or otherwise harms consumers in breach of the law.”The event was attended by representatives from the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).
Bello emphasized the need for institutions to work together to ensure product standards are met before and after market entry. He also highlighted the role of the media in accurate and responsible reporting to support consumer awareness and accountability.
The FCCPC will continue to engage with all stakeholders to foster a safer and more reliable market for Nigerian consumers.
