Lagos, Nigeria — Inquiry Launched into Death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Son. Lagos, Nigeria — A formal inquiry has been opened by a Lagos coroner into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, the toddler son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The inquiry is set to commence on 14 April following allegations of medical negligence by the family against the Euracare hospital where the child passed away on 7 January.
The 21-month-old boy, one of a set of twin boys born to Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege via surrogacy, had been suffering from a worsening illness. He was scheduled for transfer to the United States for medical treatment but died after undergoing pre-flight medical procedures, including an MRI and a spinal tap, at the Euracare hospital.
According to local reports, Adichie and her husband accused the hospital of medical negligence, a claim the hospital has denied. During a preliminary court sitting, the family’s counsel argued that the child’s death was unnatural and resulted from medical intervention.
The inquiry comes as the family seeks answers and justice for their loss.
Adichie, a 48-year-old mother of two, is a celebrated author known for her works that often explore themes of identity, race, and gender. Further details regarding the inquiry’s findings and the family’s legal actions are expected to emerge as the proceedings unfold.
