Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Prime Minister Terrance Michael Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis have agreed to appoint special envoys to strengthen bilateral engagement and expand strategic cooperation between their nations and the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The announcement was made following a meeting at the State House in Abuja, where the leaders discussed existing collaborations and explored new avenues for partnership.
During a press briefing, Prime Minister Drew revealed the decision to designate special envoys in both Abuja and Basseterre. He emphasized the aim of reinforcing institutional follow-through on existing agreements and broadening collaboration between Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the African and Caribbean regions.
Prime Minister Drew also commended President Tinubu for his leadership and dedication to fostering Africa — Caribbean relations. He highlighted the historical and cultural connections between the two nations, noting the significant Nigerian ancestry among the citizens of Saint Kitts and Nevis, particularly in the Calabar region.
The agenda for the meeting included discussions on cultural exchange, education, agriculture, food security, and broader development partnerships between Africa and the Caribbean. Prime Minister Drew highlighted the success of existing collaborations in the health and education sectors, acknowledging the substantial contributions of Nigerian-trained professionals to Saint Kitts and Nevis’development.
The agreement to establish special envoys represents a strategic shift from symbolic diplomacy to a more structured and results — oriented approach in Nigeria’s engagement with the Caribbean.
