Namibia, Russia Advance Nuclear Energy Cooperation Talks. Windhoek, Namibia — Lead: Namibia is holding active talks with Russia to speed up an inter-governmental agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, according to local reports.
The proposed accord would set the legal framework for joint projects covering uranium supply, research collaboration, and the possible construction of small — scale reactors.
Namibian authorities stated in a communiqué that the negotiations are part of a broader effort to diversify electricity sources and add value to domestic uranium output. Official statements indicate that technical teams met this week to review draft clauses on safety standards, fuel management, and skills transfer.
Sources close to the matter said the Russian side offered training programmes for Namibian engineers and outlined financing models for any future plants.
The government has not disclosed a target signing date, but regional officials confirmed both parties aim to finalise the text “within the first half of the year. ” No reactor contracts have been awarded, and environmental impact assessments have yet to begin. Cabinet is expected to review the draft once technical checks are complete.
Further details are expected.
