A tragic accident on the N1 highway outside Polokwane has resulted in the loss of two lives and left one person injured, as reported by SABC News. The incident occurred amidst the Easter weekend traffic surge, with Mashudu Mabata, the traffic spokesperson, advising motorists traveling from Gauteng to take the off-ramp at the Nyl Toll Plaza and follow the R101 to Polokwane. The sudden increase in traffic volumes has been attributed to the holiday travel, and the Gauteng Traffic Police have issued a warning for drivers to adhere to road safety regulations and avoid overloading their vehicles. In response to the high traffic volumes, the Gauteng Traffic Police will be intensifying their operations across the province, with a particular focus on routes experiencing heavy traffic.
In a separate development, police have conducted a search and seizure operation at the home of controversial officer Fannie Nkosi, as reported by EWN. Nkosi has been accused of lying and being uncooperative before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. He is believed to have acted as a middleman between suspected crime bosses and government officials.
The operation is part of broader investigations following the arrest of 12 senior police officials in connection with a multi-million rand tender involving alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat “Matlala. Nkosi has also been listed among individuals referred by the commission for further investigation.
Former President Jacob Zuma has approached the Constitutional Court of South Africa on an urgent basis, challenging a High Court ruling that dismissed his attempt to remove Judge Sisi Khampepe as chair of the TRC Cases Inquiry, as reported by EWN. Zuma argues that the matter is urgent due to the upcoming expiration of the inquiry’s mandate in May, which could expose him to contempt proceedings. The former president and former President Thabo Mbeki had taken Khampepe’s refusal to recuse herself as commission chair to the Johannesburg High Court, but their attempt to have her removed failed, with arguments that she is biased due to her previous roles in the TRC Commission and as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions.
