Rabat, Morocco — In response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, Morocco has initiated measures to shield its economy. On a recent day, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch convened the inaugural meeting of a specialized ministerial committee in Rabat. The committee’s task is to scrutinize the potential repercussions of the regional turmoil on Morocco’s markets and the purchasing power of its citizens.
Key sector representatives provided comprehensive analyses of potential scenarios and proposed strategies to mitigate economic disruptions. The committee is set to convene regularly and respond promptly to any international developments that could imperil the local economy.
The government has assured that it will continue to subsidize butane gas, despite a 68% increase in global prices since early March. Additionally, electricity bills will remain unchanged, preventing any sudden financial burden on households. Transport professionals are set to receive exceptional support from March 15 to April 15, benefiting operators in passenger and goods transport sectors.
This support, which has seen over 87,000 applications submitted through an official online platform, includes public transport operators, rural shared services, freight carriers, school and tourist transport, towing services, taxis, and urban buses. The government’s objective is to ensure a steady market supply, preserve public transport services, and shield citizens from fare hikes, with operators required to maintain current pricing for all services.
The session was attended by senior officials from various ministries, including Interior, Economy and Finance, Equipment and Water, Agriculture, Trade and Industry, Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social Economy, and Energy Transition and Sustainable Development. Ministers for Investment, Budget, and Parliamentary Relations, along with the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and the Director-General of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, were also present. This committee exemplifies Morocco’s dedication to proactive economic management and citizen protection amidst global uncertainty, ensuring stability for both households and businesses.
