Rabat, Morocco — At the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) General Assembly in Geneva, participants have commended Morocco for its financial contributions and commitment to enhancing multilateral human rights mechanisms. The assembly highlighted the importance of such support in the face of global instability.
In her capacity as GANHRI’s chair, Amina Bouayach, President of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council (CNDH), emphasized the crucial role of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in promoting and protecting fundamental rights. Bouayach also pointed out the challenges of financial sustainability and the growing recognition of NHRIs worldwide.
During her opening remarks, Bouayach discussed the essential role of NHRIs within the international system, especially in the context of multiple conflicts and rights violations. She stressed the need for credible multilateral systems that rely on both international institutions and independent national bodies adhering to the Paris Principles.
The assembly also addressed the diversity of NHRIs and their varied experiences, which Bouayach described as a “true source of strength “for knowledge exchange and collective performance improvement. Bouayach concluded by emphasizing the importance of solidarity and joint efforts in protecting human rights in a rapidly changing global environment.
Furthermore, the assembly expressed regret over the serious human rights violations occurring worldwide and acknowledged the decline in the effectiveness of international protection mechanisms. Bouayach highlighted the ongoing efforts of NHRIs to uphold their mandates, despite crises, by documenting violations and defending rights.
