In a decision that has sparked discussions following the tumultuous conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Final, the Moroccan legal system has finalized its ruling.
The Rabat Court of Appeal has confirmed the prison sentences imposed on 18 Senegalese football enthusiasts who were charged with pitch invasion during the tournament. Despite the prosecution’s call for more severe penalties, the judges maintained the original sentences, which varied from one year to six months in prison. Alongside these sentences, the defendants were also ordered to pay fines ranging from 90 to 460 euros.
The accused, who have been in custody since the AFCON final, faced charges of hooliganism, violence against the police, and damage to sports equipment. They denied these charges during their hearing, claiming that their descent onto the pitch was a desperate attempt to evade the crowd’s chaotic movements and the projectiles being hurled from the stands.
The defense argued that the prosecution failed to present any substantial evidence to substantiate their allegations. Patrick Kabou, the defense lawyer, stated, “The prosecution could not provide any evidence of these accusations.”.
The incident, which occurred during the highly anticipated AFCON Final, has raised questions about crowd control and security measures at major sporting events.
As the world continues to grapple with the complexities of sports security, this case highlights the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining order while ensuring the safety of spectators and players alike.
