Dakar 2026 YOG Preparations Gain Traction as Games Year Commences. Dakar, Senegal — 2026-02-05 Lead Paragraph: As the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) draw closer, preparations in Dakar, Senegal, are reaching a pivotal phase, with the Dakar 2026 Organising Committee (YOGOC) reporting significant progress to the 145th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session.
The momentum has shifted from planning to delivery, marked by advancements in governance, venue development, and operational readiness.
The YOGOC, led by President Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye and General Coordinator Ibrahima Wade, outlined a series of milestones achieved since the planning phase.
The Coordination Commission (CoCom) Chair, Humphrey Kayange, acknowledged the substantial progress, emphasizing the systematic approach to addressing priorities. Venue construction is advancing, with several sites already hosting operational testing.
Renovations are designed to ensure long — term access for young athletes, and the Youth Olympic Village will be transformed into student accommodation post-Games.
The International Sports Federations are actively involved, with regular site visits and targeted webinars contributing to the operational preparedness. National coordination has been strengthened, with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye demonstrating his commitment by attending the One-Year-To-Go celebrations.
The YOGOC continues to engage with the highest authorities in the country. Public engagement is on the rise, with milestone celebrations such as the One-Year-To-Go event and the fourth edition of the Dakar en Jeux festival, which featured an international futsal competition.
The festival also served as a platform for international engagement, with representatives from 42 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participating.
In the capital, the Dakar 2026 OMEGA countdown clock now marks the days until the Games.
The Dakar 2026 Learning Academy is filling up, with nearly 200 out of 400 places currently filled.
The volunteer programme, Jambaar26, launched in December, aims to mobilize 6,000 volunteers across Senegal.
The CoCom Chair, Kayange, highlighted the Games’legacy focus, emphasizing the training of young human capital across Africa.
The arrival of the Olympic flame in September, followed by a nationwide tour and local celebrations across the continent, is expected to unite communities and foster African solidarity. Dakar 2026 is set to take place from 31 October to 13 November 2026, welcoming around 2,700 young athletes aged up to 17 across three host zones.
The countdown to the Games continues, with preparations driven by a commitment to leaving a lasting legacy for African youth.
