Mogadishu (SONNA) — The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, presided over the opening of a two-day workshop in Mogadishu. The event, hosted by the Somali Gender Equality Movement (SOMGEM), aimed to bolster women’s leadership across the nation.
In her address, Minister Al — Makhzoumi recognized the government’s strides in promoting gender equality, citing the implementation of a 30% women’s quota in the Electoral and Political Parties laws. She further noted the Council of Ministers’approval of several significant legislations targeting gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, and family regulation.
The minister emphasized the importance of women in Somali society and urged participants to formulate practical recommendations to bolster the government’s initiatives for women’s empowerment and inclusive leadership. The workshop is expected to yield actionable proposals enhancing women’s involvement in governance and decision-making.
