Kericho, Kenya — Authorities in Kenya have uncovered a mass grave in Kericho containing 32 bodies, including children and foetuses, in a disturbing case that is rapidly expanding in scale.
The grim discovery, which follows a previous mass killing in Kenya, has sparked a full investigation by law enforcement.
The discovery was made earlier this week when police received reports of a secret burial site.
Initially, around 14 bodies were found, but this number has since grown significantly. Government pathologist Richard Njoroge confirmed the presence of 32 bodies in a single mass grave, including seven adults and 25 children, some of them neonates and foetuses.
The remains were reportedly stacked in gunny bags, and investigators also recovered six separate body parts.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and launched a comprehensive investigation. Autopsies are expected to determine the causes of death, with early indications suggesting some bodies may have originated from hospitals or mortuaries.
The Kericho discovery comes just three years after the Shakahola Forest Massacre, where hundreds of bodies were found along Kenya’s coast in one of the world’s deadliest cult-related disasters.
Regional officials have confirmed the ongoing investigation, with authorities stating that the matter is being taken seriously. Officials commented on the matter.
The community has expressed shock and horror at the discovery.
Local sources report that many are struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, with questions about how such a situation could have occurred.
The incident has also raised concerns about the handling of bodies in health facilities. Further details about the investigation and the identities of the deceased are expected to be released as the probe continues.
The government has promised to provide updates as they become available.
