LILONGWE, Malawi — The Malawian Parliament has initiated a fresh inquiry into the 2024 military plane crash that took the life of former Vice President Saulos Chilima. The parliamentary committee, led by Walter Nyamilandu, has been tasked with conducting a transparent and credible investigation.
Nyamilandu, who chairs the special committee, has committed to an inquiry marked by fairness, professionalism, and accountability. The committee, formed last week following a directive from Speaker Sameer Suleman, comprises lawmakers from various political parties and is charged with revealing the full details of the crash, which occurred on June 10, 2024, in the Chikangawa Forest.
The previous investigation had identified inconsistencies and gaps, necessitating a comprehensive review. Nyamilandu highlighted the need for cooperation from key stakeholders to ensure the success of the inquiry, emphasizing that their collective support is crucial.
The committee is anticipated to soon determine the public nature of its proceedings, with Nyamilandu explaining that a meeting will be held to outline the inquiry’s next steps, including the decision on whether hearings will be open to the public or held in private.
