Port said Egypt — Eighteen people died and three were injured on Thursday when a delivery lorry and a pick-up collided on the 30 June Axis highway south of Port said according to local reports. Official statements indicate the pick-up was carrying fishermen to coastal fish farms when it became trapped between two heavy trucks shortly after midday. Emergency teams removed the injured to hospital and prosecutors opened an inquiry into how the crash occurred.
Egypt’s Prime Minister, attending a separate event in Washington, posted online that he had instructed the Port Said governor to coordinate aid payments to the families of the dead and injured. Deadly accidents are frequent on Egypt’s roads, where freight lorries and microbuses often share ageing highways. Further details are expected.
