Mogadishu, Somalia — The Somalia Humanitarian Forum (CHF) in Mogadishu marked a strategic pivot, with the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamud Moallin Abdulle, emphasizing the shift from emergency response to long-term disaster preparedness. Addressing the gathering, Abdulle highlighted the urgency of adopting sustainable solutions that prioritize disaster prevention and community resilience.
Abdulle pointed out the nation’s persistent challenges, including recurring droughts and floods, which have devastating effects on livelihoods and exacerbate food insecurity and malnutrition. He outlined key government priorities, including institutional coordination, early warning systems, and disaster prevention efforts.
The CHF has drawn a diverse group of participants, including representatives from the Federal Government, United Nations agencies, ambassadors, donors, NGOs, the private sector, civil society, academia, diaspora communities, and experts in humanitarian response and climate — related crises. The forum’s objective is to align these efforts and foster resilient approaches to Somalia’s humanitarian challenges.
The event underscores the government’s commitment to proactive disaster management, with a focus on enhancing early warning systems and reinforcing partnerships to prevent disasters before they occur. The Somalia Humanitarian Forum serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, identifying gaps, and improving disaster management and humanitarian response in the country.
