Madagascar’s Interim Leadership Strengthens Ties with Russia. Antananarivo, Madagascar — Madagascar’s interim President Michael Randrianirina has embarked on a significant diplomatic initiative, strengthening ties with Russia following the military-led overthrow of the previous government in October 2025. This marks the first official visit by a Malagasy leader to Moscow in nearly 50 years.
Since taking power, Randrianirina has led a “Refoundation “aimed at restoring state authority, combating corruption, and rebuilding public trust. His visit to Russia, which took place in February 2026, is seen as a pivotal moment in Madagascar’s foreign policy. During his visit, President Randrianirina emphasized Madagascar’s desire to engage with a diverse array of nations, including the BRICS alliance.
Security cooperation with Moscow has already commenced, with Russia supplying military equipment to Madagascar and sending a delegation to train the island nation’s armed forces.
The partnership extends beyond military affairs, with targeted sectors including agriculture and Madagascar’s mineral resources. Projects involve Russian fertilizers and seeds, and there is a focus on developing Madagascar’s mineral resources.
Randrianirina has stated that a military committee will rule alongside a transitional government, with new elections scheduled to take place within two years.
This strategic realignment with Russia comes amidst a period of political transition in Madagascar, and it is expected to have significant implications for the country’s future.
The interim president’s efforts to reset Madagascar’s foreign policy are a clear indication of the nation’s desire to diversify its international partnerships and secure support in key areas.
Further details regarding the scope and impact of this new relationship are expected to emerge as the cooperation between Madagascar and Russia continues to develop.
