In Johannesburg, South Africa, over 18,900 people have been processed at the Lebombo border post in the past 24 hours, signaling the beginning of the busy Easter weekend.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) anticipates the peak will occur around 2pm on Thursday. Michael Masiapato, BMA Commissioner, noted that the cooperation with the N4 toll route has been instrumental in preparing for the high traffic volumes. “We are indeed entering into a festive period, “Masiapato commented, “as the numbers start to escalate during this time.”.
The TREC N4, which manages the toll gate, provides real-time data on the flow of people through the N4 corridor.
Additionally, the BMA is utilizing new drone technology to detect and prevent illegal crossings.
