Spain’s Lamine Yamal, a practicing Muslim, has spoken out against the “disrespectful and intolerable “racist chants directed at Egypt during Spain’s 0-0 draw with Egypt in Barcelona.
The chants, described as “Islamophobic and xenophobic, “were investigated by Spanish police following the friendly match at RCDE Stadium. Yamal, who played a key role in Spain’s European Championship win in 2024, emphasized the importance of enjoying football without disrespecting individuals based on their beliefs.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and coach Luis de la Fuente also condemned the incident, with de la Fuente calling the chants “intolerable “and urging their removal from society.
The match, originally set to be played in Qatar, was moved due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
