Nairobi, Kenya — A deluge of heavy rainfall since 31 March 2026 has unleashed a trail of destruction across over 30 Kenyan counties, leading to fatalities and extensive displacement. As of 2 April, the toll includes at least 110 confirmed deaths, with 37 in Nairobi alone, and additional losses in the Eastern, Rift Valley, Nyanza, Central, Coast, and West regions. Three individuals remain unaccounted for, with the number of casualties anticipated to rise as search and rescue efforts persist.
The affected have been accommodated in temporary shelters, with a total of 34,765 people displaced. The heavy rains have also compromised the integrity of roads and bridges, isolating several areas. Meteorological forecasts predict further moderate rainfall within the next 24 hours.
Several roads and bridges have been damaged and rendered impassable, further complicating relief efforts. The ongoing heavy rains are expected to exacerbate the situation, prompting authorities to issue warnings and mobilize resources for relief and recovery operations.
The disaster has underscored the critical need for infrastructure resilience and early warning systems to mitigate the impact of severe weather events in the region. As the situation unfolds, the international community is being called upon to provide support to the affected populations.
