Rabat — Moroccan football coach Jamil Benouahi has been officially named the head coach of the Bloemfontein-based Premier Soccer League team, Marumo Gallants. The appointment comes after the departure of French coach Alexandre Lafitte, who was dismissed following a series of poor performances that left the team near the brink of relegation. Benouahi, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence and has extensive international coaching experience, aims to stabilize the team’s performance and steer it clear of potential relegation.
The decision to appoint Benouahi, who was most recently coaching in Burkina Faso and previously worked as an assistant coach at AS FAR in Rabat, was made following the suspension of Lafitte in March for failing to meet his obligations to the club. Despite leading Marumo Gallants to the Carling Knockout Cup final last year, the team’s struggle continued, and Lafitte’s tenure came to an end.
Benouahi’s appointment is the fifth change in the club’s technical leadership since its relocation to Bloemfontein for the 2024/25 season, reflecting the club’s turbulent period. He has been joined by assistant coaches Julien Outrebon and Trevor Mathiane, who served as interim caretakers following Lafitte’s suspension. The club is hopeful that the new technical team will help secure their top-flight status in the South African Premier Division.
