The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has released a comprehensive snapshot of displacement and return trends in Sudan. The report, based on data from nearly 13,000 locations across the nation, reveals that there are currently an estimated 8,936,175 internally displaced persons (IDPs) scattered across 11,493 locations within 185 localities across all 18 states. Additionally, an estimated 3,994,019 individuals have returned to their places of origin, with 2,822 locations across 73 localities in nine states reporting their return.
The vast majority of returnees, 83 per cent, are those who had been internally displaced, with 17 per cent returning from locations abroad. The demographic composition is predominantly young, with over half of both IDPs and returnees being children under the age of 18.
The report also indicates a notable decrease in the number of IDPs, which has fallen by 23 per cent from the highest recorded displaced population. This decrease is a one per cent reduction compared to the previous month’s figures. Conversely, the number of returnees has seen a modest increase of four per cent compared to the previous month.
