Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The Economic Commission for Africa’s Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist, Hanan Morsy, has sounded a call for decisive action in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063. Speaking at the Twelfth Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in Addis Ababa, Morsy emphasized the need for a shift from dialogue to tangible outcomes.
The forum, attended by 1,535 participants from 48 countries, was a platform to review progress and challenges in implementing the SDGs. Morsy noted that while some progress has been made, it is uneven, and reversals are occurring due to economic shocks, climate stress, and geopolitical fragmentation. “Incremental progress will not deliver the SDGs,” Morsy said advocating for four key priorities: scaling up and coordinating action, advancing digital transformation, reforming domestic and global financing, and accelerating structural transformation through industrialization and regional integration.
Access to water and energy is improving, but safely managed services remain below global standards, with millions still lacking electricity. Rapid urbanization, Morsy warned, is outpacing planning and service delivery, while financing constraints are tightening.
The forum’s focus on digital transformation underscores the potential of technology to drive development across Africa. Morsy highlighted the need for increased investment and financial support. Participants echoed Morsy’s call for action, emphasizing the importance of regional integration and cooperation in achieving the SDGs.
The outcomes of the forum are expected to inform broader global discussions on the SDGs and Agenda 2063.
