Ghana Confirms at Least 55 Citizens Dead in Ukraine Conflict. Accra, Ghana — February 27, 2026 Lead Paragraph Ghana’s foreign affairs minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that at least 55 Ghanaians have been killed while fighting for Russia in Ukraine. Ablakwa made the announcement following a visit to the Ukrainian capital, where he discussed the fate of two Ghanaians taken prisoner at the frontline.
He also revealed that 272 Ghanaian nationals have been lured into the conflict since 2022, describing them as “victims of manipulation, misinformation, and criminal trafficking networks.”Body The Ghanaian government has expressed its commitment to dismantling all illegal recruitment schemes within its jurisdiction. This revelation comes as a growing number of African countries discover their citizens have been deceived into joining the conflict on the side of Russia.
Ukraine’s foreign minister reported on Wednesday that nearly 1,800 people from 36 African countries have been recruited to fight for Russia, with most being promised civilian jobs that turned out to be military contracts.
The deaths of the Ghanaians represent the highest number of casualties from a single African country confirmed in the war. Local media in Cameroon have reported that 94 of its nationals have died, but authorities have not commented on these figures.
Two South Africans and at least one Kenyan have also died in the conflict.
Russia has denied recruiting African citizens to fight in Ukraine.
The International Crisis Group highlighted in a report published on Friday that the recruitment scandal makes the Ukraine war a direct concern for African governments.
As their citizens become entangled in the conflict, leaders may face increased domestic pressure, making it challenging to adhere to non — alignment principles. Further details regarding the situation are expected to emerge as investigations continue.
The Ghanaian government remains committed to protecting its citizens and dismantling recruitment schemes.
