In Libreville, Gabon, Five Major Labor Federations Announced Their Readiness for the Upcoming Professional Elections Scheduled for April 22.
The Confédération syndicale gabonais (Cosyga), the Confédération générale des travailleurs, forces libre (CGT/FL), the Entente syndicale des travailleurs du Gabon (ENSYTG), the Confédération gabonaise des syndicats libre (CGSL), and the Confédération syndicale démocratique du travail (CSDT) held a press conference on April 15, where they declared their support for the elections. These federations, gathered as a collective, stated that they are prepared to compete under the delegate election model adopted by the government, as opposed to the direct election model sought by certain groups.
The president of the ENSYTG, Léon Mebiame, explained that the government had consulted all confederations and called for discussions on the mode and conditions of conducting the professional elections. After consultations, each party provided its opinion, and the government made the final decision, opting for the delegate election model. Mebiame emphasized that the government had the final say in the election mode choice after consulting national labor forces.
The federations also reminded that, according to the Gabonese Constitution, the initiative of laws belongs concurrently to the President of the Republic, the head of government, within the framework of law projects, and to Parliament within the framework of proposals for laws.
The Secretary — General of the CGT-FL, Etienne Moussavou, added that the regulations governing professional elections in the country are issued by the government, within the framework of tripartite considerations.
The syndical organizations emphasized that the government has strictly respected the election timeline established, which should not be modified to the detriment of the parapublic and private sectors, which group the largest number of workers in the country.
The federations have called on all members of their trade unions and all workers to mobilize for a massive participation in the professional elections scheduled for April 22.
