LIBREVILLE, GABON — In Libreville on Thursday, March 26, 2026, Gabonese journalists convened for a pivotal discussion on ethical and professional standards in journalism. The event, organized by the Media and Democracy Group in collaboration with the French embassy and the Ministry of Communication and Media, was held at the Institut Français de Libreville.
The central theme of the debate was “Journalists, All Corrupted?”This question sought to confront the prevalent charge that journalists are corrupt, exploring the challenges and pressures that can lead to unethical behavior. Charlène Mouboulou, a participant in the debate, highlighted the need for self-reflection, stating that the conclusion reached was that journalists are not uniformly corrupt and that there is a desire to uphold professional integrity.
However, Mouboulou also acknowledged the difficulties faced, including poor working conditions, economic constraints, and the struggle to earn a decent salary, which can contribute to unethical practices.
Additionally, the event marked the presentation of certificates to participants in a journalism investigation training program organized by Media and Democracy. Minister of Communication and Media, Germain Biahodjow, commended the journalists’efforts and thanked the French embassy for its support in this educational initiative.
The debate comes at a critical time, as media ethics are globally under scrutiny. It underscores the challenges journalists in Gabon face and the commitment to maintain professional standards in the face of external pressures.
