LIBREVILLE, Gabon — The Gabonese government has announced the launch of “Gabon Infini, “a comprehensive $200 million initiative aimed at enhancing forest conservation and ecosystem protection. The project, which marks a significant stride towards ecological sovereignty, was unveiled by Presidential spokesperson Théophane Nzame-Nze Biyoghe in Libreville.
The “Gabon Infini “project is designed to mobilize approximately 113.9 billion FCFA over a decade, utilizing the Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) model. This funding will be allocated to preserving tropical forests, safeguarding freshwater resources, and fostering sustainable economic activities that benefit local communities.
International partnerships, including the Bezos Earth Fund, The Nature Conservancy, and the Global Environment Facility, are instrumental in this financing. The initiative is aligned with the global “30×30″target, which seeks to designate 30 percent of the world’s land and sea as protected areas by 2030. “Gabon Infini “is poised to safeguard 3.9 million hectares of forests and 18,000 kilometers of waterways, further solidifying Gabon’s role as a key player in climate diplomacy.
Gabon, with its 89 percent forest coverage, is one of the world’s few carbon-negative countries. The success of the “Gabon Infini “project hinges on effective operational implementation, emphasizing financial transparency, commitment monitoring, and the active involvement of local communities. The project is seen as a continuation of a national environmental strategy that harmonizes national sovereignty, climate responsibility, and sustainable development.
