Gabon Strengthens Human Rights Reporting Capabilities with UN Training. LIBREVILLE, Gabon — 29 January 2026 (AGP) – A capacity-building workshop for the Gabonese National Mechanism for Implementation, Reporting, and Follow-up (MNMRS) was held on 27 and 28 January 2026 at the United Nations House, benefiting members of the National Reporting Committee (CNRR), as indicated by official sources.
The training session was organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (HCDH) and was led by Ms.
Asita — Maria Scherrieb, an expert from the Centre for Civil and Political Rights (CCPR Centre), and Ms. Ivana Machonova Schellongova, an expert from the HCDH/OHCHR.
The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance the MNMRS in Gabon through the adoption of a practical tool, the National Database for Tracking Recommendations (NRTD), with the aim of improving inter-ministerial coordination, the monitoring of the implementation of international recommendations, and the preparation of human rights-related reports.
The first day of the session focused on the presentation and hands — on use of the NRTD, a web-based database provided on request by the HCDH/OHCHR. This tool enables a state to centralize and track recommendations made by international human rights mechanisms, including the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), treaty bodies, and special procedures. Participants were trained on the platform’s functionalities, which include compiling all international recommendations in a single space, planning implementation actions, tracking their progress, and facilitating the preparation of future reports.
Practical exercises were conducted to facilitate effective adoption of the tool.
The second day of the workshop highlighted the roles and missions of the MNMRS, which is responsible for coordinating the preparation of reports submitted by the state to international and regional human rights mechanisms, ensuring coordination among different stakeholders, and monitoring the implementation of recommendations addressed to the country.
The need to strengthen the functioning of the existing committee to improve the MNMRS’s effectiveness in Gabon was emphasized.
Participants recommended the continuation of the process to amend Decree No. 000102/PR/MHLCCL of 15 January 2007, which established and organized the National Reporting Committee on Human Rights. Good practices observed in other countries were also presented, allowing Gabon to identify a model suitable for its institutional context and national priorities.
A roadmap was developed before the workshop’s conclusion to define the next steps in the process. Further details are expected to emerge as the process progresses.
The training comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen human rights reporting and implementation mechanisms in Gabon, in line with international standards and practices.
