Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education has launched a major initiative to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its higher education system, aiming to enhance learning quality, transparency, and accountability across institutions.
According to Zelalem Assefa, Chief Executive Officer for ICT and Digital Education at the Ministry, over 34,000 instructors at higher learning institutions are receiving comprehensive AI training as part of the nationwide rollout.
“Students and teachers should acquire knowledge of artificial intelligence,” said Assefa in an interview with a local TV station. “This isn’t just about technology—it’s about transforming our education system to meet global standards.”
Key Goals of the Initiative:
- Monitor student performance and engagement using intelligent analytics tools.
- Prevent cheating through proctoring systems powered by AI.
- Promote accountability within the education system through real-time tracking and reporting.
The program is reportedly being developed in collaboration with Arizona University, leveraging both local capacity-building and international expertise.
This marks one of the most ambitious AI deployments in African education, positioning Ethiopia as a potential leader in digital transformation in higher learning across the continent.
