Ethiopia’s Tigray Region Preparing for Potential Conflict Amidst Leadership Changes. City, Country — Mekele, Ethiopia — The Tigray region of Ethiopia is witnessing a period of significant political and military realignment, according to Africa Intelligence. These developments come amidst rising tensions in the region and preparations for potential conflict.
In recent weeks, there have been reports indicating that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a dominant political and military force in the region, has been facing internal power struggles.
The situation has been further complicated by the establishment of a new command post by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is reportedly preparing his forces for a possible clash with neighboring Eritrea.
According to local reports, Shewit Bitew, a young politician and former member of the TPLF, has initiated efforts to dismantle the Tigray Peace Forces, which he himself established last year.
This move is seen as an attempt to reduce the influence of the TPLF within the opposition militia, which has become entangled in the power dynamics of the region.
The African leaders meeting in the Ethiopian capital in mid — February, which includes the headquarters of the pan-African organisation, carefully avoided discussing the crisis in the north of the country, indicating the sensitive nature of the situation.
In addition, the Ethiopian electoral commission is seeking to develop digital tools for the 2026 elections, a move in line with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s technological ambitions.
However, a lack of funding is reported to be hindering the deployment of these tools.
The Ethiopian administration is also reported to be exploring support from the Afar community, which spans the border with Eritrea. While the Afar community is known for its support of the Ethiopian government, there are concerns about their stance on the armed struggle option, which could be a significant factor in any potential conflict.
As tensions rise, Tigrayan leaders are reorganising their military chain of command in preparation for a possible conflict.
The government has not yet commented on these developments, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
The situation in the Tigray region remains fluid, with potential implications for both regional and national security.
As the government and regional leaders navigate these challenges, the international community is keeping a close watch on the developments.
