Gabon Elected to African Union Peace and Security Council: Diplomatic Victory Celebrated. LIBREVILLE, Gabon — 12 February 2026 (AGP) – The Gabonese Republic has achieved another diplomatic triumph with its election to the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, held in Addis Ababa. This milestone comes as a significant boost for the country’s foreign relations, following a series of successful diplomatic engagements under the new leadership.
The Gabonese diplomatic corps, which has seen a resurgence since the change in regime, has been effective in restoring the nation’s status within the African community.
The election to the Peace and Security Council is a significant victory, as it coincides with Gabon’s return to the continental fold after being suspended following the Coup de Libération of August 30, 2023, which overthrew the previous government of Ali Bongo Ondimba.
As a testament to its commitment to peace and security, Gabon has been recognized for its role in the peaceful transition and credible, transparent elections.
The country’s approach, exemplified by the bloodless coup and smooth transition, has been commended by the international community, positioning Gabon as a model for stability. This latest diplomatic success follows a string of other achievements, including the election of Prosper Zo’o Minto as the head of the African Telecommunication Union (ASECNA), Michel Xavier Biang’s appointment as the Permanent Representative of the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie to the United Nations in New York, Bernice Abeghe Owono’s nomination as ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Gabon to UNESCO, and the election of Professor Charles Mba Owono as a judge at the OHADA Common Court of Justice and Arbitration. These accomplishments reflect President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s stated goal of making Gabon a significant player on the international stage.
Further details regarding Gabon’s role in the AU Peace and Security Council are expected in the coming days.
