A delegation from the National Independent Human Rights Commission of Somalia, led by Chairperson Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed, is actively participating in a significant international conference on human rights. The conference, held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, commenced today and spans three days.
The gathering brings together human rights bodies from across the globe to address critical global human rights issues. Accompanying Dr. Ahmed are Deputy Chair Mohamed Harun Mahmoud and Commissioner Farhan Mohamed Jimale.
The opening day of the conference focused on the escalating challenges of irregular migration and its far — reaching impact on countries, with a particular emphasis on African nations. The Somali delegation is anticipated to engage in bilateral meetings with various UN agencies and regional and continental organizations, including those in the Horn of Africa, to bolster collaboration on human rights and migration-related matters.
The conference is a crucial platform for Somali authorities to engage with the international community and discuss strategies to enhance human rights standards and address the complex issues of irregular migration. The delegation’s participation reflects Somalia’s commitment to global human rights initiatives and regional cooperation.
The conference comes at a time when irregular migration is increasingly becoming a global concern, with millions of people being displaced or migrating irregularly due to conflicts, poverty, and climate change. Somalia, being an African nation, is not immune to these challenges and is actively seeking international support and cooperation to address the issue effectively.
