In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a Persistent Humanitarian Crisis Has Led to a Significant Increase in Internal Displacement.
As of January 2026, over 300,000 new displacements have been reported, bringing the total number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to approximately 5. 61 million.
The majority of these displacements, 76%, are attributed to armed attacks and confrontations.
The provinces of South Kivu (44%), Nord-Kivu (32%), and Tanganyika (14%) have seen the highest number of internal displacements during the year. Conversely, 87% of returns during this period have been recorded in South Kivu (67%) and Nord-Kivu (20%).
