The Ghanaian football world was left in shock on Sunday as Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong succumbed to his injuries following an armed attack on the team’s bus. The incident occurred as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex. According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the 20-year-old Frimpong was struck in the head during the attack and later died in the hospital.
The attack, which took place on a remote stretch of road, involved six masked men who blocked the team’s path with guns and assault rifles. The robbers opened fire on the bus as it attempted to reverse away from the danger, the club reported. While staff and players managed to flee the vehicle, Frimpong was left critically injured. The young talent, who had scored two goals in 13 appearances this season, is the only reported fatality from the incident.
The GFA expressed profound shock and sorrow over Frimpong’s passing, extending heartfelt condolences to his family, teammates, technical staff, management, and the entire Berekum Chelsea community. “The incident has sent shockwaves across the entire football fraternity, “the GFA stated, highlighting the impact of the tragedy on the sport.
This is not the first time a football team in Ghana has faced such violence. FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities, and AshantiGold have all reported similar attacks in recent years. In response to Sunday’s incident, local police have deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area, vowing to arrest the perpetrators as quickly as possible.
