CAPE TOWN — South African MP Dereleen James of ActionSA has filed criminal charges against Social Development Minister Sisi Tolashe. James alleges that Tolashe provided false information to Parliament concerning the origin of two luxury SUVs associated with the ANC Women’s League.
The vehicles, two BAIC Beijing X55s, were said to have been donated but were never officially declared. Each car is valued at nearly a million rand and has sparked scrutiny from senior ANC members. James suspects the cars might have been undeclared gifts from foreign officials.
She has launched a corruption investigation, lodged a complaint with the Public Protector, and referred the matter to the Parliament’s Ethics Committee.
Additionally, James has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the issue promptly.
