Johannesburg — President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched “Operation Ukubusa”, a synchronised law-enforcement drive aimed at organised criminal networks that drain billions of rands from South Africa’s formal economy.
The presidency said the new unit will pool the police, customs and revenue service together with high — tech data analytics and surveillance tools to tackle drug syndicates, illegal mining gangs and broader under-the-radar trafficking.
An official statement released on Monday framed the move as “urgent”, warning that unchecked illicit activity is eroding economic stability and deepening unemployment in Africa’s most industrialised state.
No arrests, asset seizures or timeline have yet been announced; the government says further operational details “will be released in the coming weeks”.
