In a significant development for African trade, South Africa and Kenya have expressed enthusiastic support for China’s new zero-tariff policy, which will take effect from May 1st. This policy grants duty-free access to the Chinese market for goods from 53 African countries, including those that maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing. Officials commented on the matter.
The policy is anticipated to significantly boost the volume of South African products entering the Chinese market, with a particular focus on citrus, wine, and aloe — based products.
In Kenya, the Chinese Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs hosted a seminar emphasizing the “infinite opportunities “presented by the new policy. Kenyan officials are confident that it will help upgrade product quality and improve the business environment, further strengthening the enduring partnership between Kenya and China.
The zero — tariff policy is part of China’s broader vision for China-Africa economic ties, as outlined by President Xi Jinping at the 2025 FOCAC coordinators’meeting. It is poised to reshape trade flows and deepen China-Africa economic integration, aligning with the AU Agenda 2063’s vision of a prosperous and integrated Africa.
