JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) is conducting a full investigation into a bus driver in the Free State province, following the discovery of 32 undocumented passengers aboard the vehicle. The incident came to light after the bus, which originated from Beitbridge, was intercepted near Bloemfontein.
BMA officials revealed that the bus had been cleared of any irregularities by immigration and weighbridge checks before departure. However, a subsequent inspection uncovered the undocumented passengers, prompting an immediate inquiry.
BMA Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato confirmed that the bus was compliant with all documentation for cross-border travel and that the initial passengers had been processed. The weighbridge check, including video footage, showed the bus was within weight limits. Nonetheless, the presence of the additional passengers has led to questions about their origin.
The investigation now centers on the bus driver, who is under suspicion for aiding and abetting illegal immigration. The BMA is seeking to ascertain where the 32 individuals were picked up by the driver. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by border authorities in monitoring immigration and preventing unauthorized crossings.
