Mali Leads Sahel Force Launch Amidst Regional Integration Efforts. City, Country — Bamako, Mali — December 21, 2025 Mali’s army ruler, General Assimi Goita, presided over a significant ceremony at an airforce base in Bamako, marking the establishment of a unified regional force for the Sahel countries. This force is a recent development in the efforts of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to foster closer integration among the nations, which are currently led by military juntas and addressing an Islamist insurgency.
In January, Niger’s defense minister announced that the 5,000-strong force would operate collectively to counter security threats in the region. General Daouda Traoré of Burkina Faso has been appointed to head the force, which will establish its command base in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
The ceremony in Bamako was attended by defense ministers of the Sahel Alliance member states, as well as ambassadors and representatives of international organizations accredited to Mali.
The Sahel Alliance was formed by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger after they withdrew from ECOWAS, citing inhumane, coup — related sanctions and a perceived lack of support for the interests of their citizens.
According to regional officials, the creation of this unified force is a crucial step towards enhancing security and stability in the Sahel region.
The three countries, all facing similar security challenges, have recognized the importance of pooling their resources and expertise to combat the threats effectively.
The Sahel region has been a hotbed of instability and violence, with several attacks attributed to Islamist extremist groups.
The new force is expected to bolster the region’s defenses and contribute to the broader international efforts to counter terrorism and promote peace. Further details regarding the operational capabilities and specific strategies of the Sahel force were not immediately available.
However, regional officials confirmed that the force will be a significant addition to the ongoing efforts to secure the Sahel region.
As the Sahel force takes shape, the international community remains hopeful that it will contribute to a more stable and secure Sahel.
The situation in the region continues to evolve, and further details are expected to emerge as the force becomes fully operational.
