In a significant development for the city of Port — Gentil, the President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, officially launched the new Moukala Market on Monday. The event, which took place alongside the inauguration of the butane filling center, marked the opening of a modern, state-of-the-art commercial space in the 4th arrondissement of Port-Gentil, within the province of Ogooué-Maritime in western Gabon. The Agence Gabonaise de Presse reported that the market is set to offer the local population a new, contemporary commercial environment.
Addressing the crowd, the mayor of the 4th arrondissement, Eric Nang, hailed the occasion as a “memorable day “for the residents, emphasizing the symbolic significance of the inauguration. He commended the President for his presence, stating, “Your presence among us is a testament to the fact that for you, every day is an opportunity to build and transform.”Mayor Nang also noted that the completion of the project “confirms that your commitment is not made of empty promises, but of concrete actions that change the daily lives of our citizens.”.
Eric Mbimbi, the responsible figure at GI — BTP, highlighted the market’s features, noting that it spans 1,400 square meters and includes 110 stalls, five boxes, a municipal police office, a block of ten toilets, and 11 parking spaces. Mbimbi expressed satisfaction with the project’s completion, despite challenges such as climatic and logistical issues, and praised the professionalism of his team.
Representing the traders, a woman expressed her gratitude, viewing the market as more than just a commercial space. She described it as a place of life, solidarity, and hope. She thanked the President for his attention to the struggles of traders and for recognizing their role in society. Local authorities encouraged users to preserve the public facility, noting its importance for local economic development.
The event is part of a series of infrastructure initiatives in the Ogooué-Maritime region, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens.
