Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said that Moscow considers it important to reach a consensus on the reform of the UN Security Council, warning that the expansion of the central body of the world organization by adding NATO and EU countries is unacceptable.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for Brazil, India, and countries from the African continent to be granted permanent membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC), arguing that this would ensure representation of the global majority.

“Countries like India, Brazil, and representatives from Africa should have permanent seats on the Security Council. This is necessary to ensure that the world’s majority is represented,” Lavrov said in an interview with Russian media.

The Russian Foreign Minister’s statement aligns with previous pronouncements from Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin, who emphasized the importance of achieving consensus on UNSC reform.

Vershinin expressed Moscow’s rejection of expanding the Council’s membership through the inclusion of NATO and EU nations.
